Charging Effects Mitigation Using Innovative Materials

Target of the project is the identification and validation of new material solutions to analyze problems related to charging effects in spacecraft systems.

The space environment affects all materials and systems, and this raises many challenges for new materials development and ground characterization. The space environment has a complex and dynamic structure. It includes neutral species, charged particles, plasmas, electric and magnetic fields, solar and galactic radiation, meteoroids and space debris, each of which can cause damage to a spacecraft.

The charging behavior of material used in space flight hardware differs from one material to another. That implies a materials characterization to support the evaluation of charging effects processes erization process of the different involved materials for a good and realistic prediction of their charging level in space environment.

The Technical Project Office of ATN is deeply involved in the project development in collaboration with the European Space Agency.
