NEW SPACE/ARRAKIHS MISSION

Analysis of Resolved Remnants of Accreted Galaxies as a Key Instrument for Halo Surveys

We have started our activities in the frame of ARRAKIHS (Analysis of Resolved Remnants of Accreted Galaxies as a Key Instrument for Halo Surveys) with SATLANTIS, key company in the New Space arena, the leader in the mission consortium and responsible for the Payload, the brain of ARRAKIHS, an instrument composed of two visible cameras and two infrared cameras developed by SATLANTIS. It is an ESA-fast mission devoted to exploring the Universe to understand the nature of the dark matter that comprises it.

ARRAKIHS's main goal is to successfully complete Phase B in the first half of 2026. This is the last step in the decision to adopt ARRAKIHS as the next fast-class mission in the ESA's Scientific Program (F2), with an estimated launch date of 2030.

Spain leads the mission consortium, including essential contributions from Switzerland, Belgium, Sweden, Austria, the United Kingdom, and Portugal, as well as additional contributions to science from Holland, Norway, the US, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Few highlights:

  • We succeeded in achieving the use of our CPSA contract (between ALTER and ESA) to support the ESA's fast missions (limited budget and size with different actors and lower requirements).
  • Through SATLANTIS we will aim at joining the rest of payload members in ARRAKIHS .
